A small fire broke out Sunday afternoon in the historic Hotel Lafayette in downtown Buffalo.

Fire crews responded at 5:22 p. m. to the landmark seven-story structure at 391 Washington St. that is set to close April 1, according to a fire official.

The fire was confined to one room on the third floor. The hotel is used primarily as short-term emergency housing for about 40 clients of social services agencies.

Firefighters were able to safely escort residents from the building, and no injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation. Fire officials estimated damage at $10,000 to the building and $3,000 to the contents.
