Fire blamed on smoking destroys woman's home
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:46 AM
LOCKPORT — Smoking is being blamed for a fire that destroyed a woman's manufactured home
Sunday and spread to neighbor's shed and home on Fernwood Drive in the Woodlands Mobile Home
Park.
Barbara R. Blair, 66, told Niagara County sheriff's deputies that she was smoking a
cigarette and believes that was the cause of the fire just after 11 a.m. at 1048 Fernwood
Drive, according to a report released Monday.
Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames when they arrived. Small explosions inside the
house were caused by Blair's oxygen tanks exploding. Blair was treated at the scene for
possible smoke inhalation and was given an oxygen tank at the scene until hers could be
replaced by the Red Cross, deputies said. No other injuries were reported.
Blair's mobile home was a total loss, and her vehicle in the driveway was damaged. Her
neighbor, John Skutt, had heat damage to the siding of his home, and his shed was destroyed.
Volunteers from Rapids, South Lockport, Wendleville fire departments responded, as did
ambulances from Clarence, Rapids and Rural/Metro.
