A United Airlines flight en route from Rochester to Chicago made an emergency landing at

Buffalo Niagara International Airport this morning after the crew discovered smoke in a

lavatory.

Mike Trevino, a United spokesman in Chicago, said Flight 769 left Rochester at 7:35 a.m.

and was diverted to Buffalo at 8:17 a.m. "out of an abundance of caution" after the smoke was

detected.

"As a precaution, the flight was diverted to Buffalo," Trevino said.

He said the A-319 Airbus sustained no serious damage, but the 120 passengers and five crew

members boarded another aircraft to complete the trip to Chicago.

Airline officials are continuing their investigation as to the origin of the smoke, but

said it appeared to emanate from an auxiliary power unit.
