Lawtons boy injured in snowmobile accident
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:43 AM
An 8-year-old boy was injured Wednesday night when he was ejected from a snowmobile
involved in an accident with another snowmobile in the Town of Concord, Erie County sheriff's
officials reported.
Nicholas Mangano, of Lawtons, was taken to Women and Children's Hospital for treatment of
head and internal injuries. His condition was not available.
Nicholas' father, Mark Mangano, 42, was operating a snowmobile northbound on a trail south
of Route 39 at about 8:35 p.m., when his vehicle was involved in an incident with a southbound
snowmobile driven by Jay Vacco, 25, sheriff's officials said.
Investigators believe that the two operators both swerved to avoid a possible head-on
collision near a hillcrest.
"The investigation so far suggests that they got close enough that [Vacco's] shoulder made
impact with something, and it may have been the young man's helmet," said Sgt. Richard
Lauricella, who heads the sheriff's Snowmobile Unit.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's Snowmobile and Accident
Investigation Units.
