OLAF FUB SEZ: According to renowned newspaper editor William Allen White, born on this date in 1868, “Liberty is the only thing you can’t have unless you give it to others.”
FURRY FRIENDS— Opening Thursday in Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence is the newest adoption outlet for the No-kill SPCA of Wyoming County, which has been caring for homeless country kitties and pups since 1905. Easiest way to find it is to enter the mall by the rear doors near the cinema. To celebrate, the SPCA is holding a chance auction through March 5.
NO SKATES—Former Buffalo Sabres player Rob Ray seems to be everywhere these days—sports dinners, fundraisers, filling in for injured Mike Robitaille on game broadcasts. Friday will find him in the Barker Central High School gym, where he and seven other Sabres alumni will take on the Barker Central School staff in a charity basketball game that starts at 8 p. m.
Tickets are $5 advance, $7 at the door, if any are left. Last time the Sabres alumni visited, it was standing-room-only. Proceeds benefit Niagara Hospice, the Sabres Alumni Scholarship Fund and the school’s English and video clubs.
HUNGRY?—If you’re going to Barker on Friday night, stop first in Newfane, where there’s a free community dinner from 5 to 6:30 in First Baptist Church, 6047 East Ave. off Route 78. All are welcome.
NEW HOME—The folks who are working to establish Black Rock Canal Park now have an office, and they’ll celebrate with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p. m. Thursday in Renovation Church, 567 Hertel Ave., which has donated the space.
Margaret Szczepaniec, chairwoman of the Black Rock Canal Steering Committee, reported last month that more than $1 million in state funds have been obtained for a feasibility study, which is now in progress, and site preparations.
Plans call for an expansion of the Ontario Street Boat Launch, Buffalo’s last free boat launch, and construction of some amenities, such as a store, cafe, restrooms, meeting facilities and a visitors center. For info, visit www.blackrockcanalpark.com.
WOMEN ON WHEELS —If your sweetheart won’t warm up to flowers and candy, consider a night out Saturday in the Rainbow Roller Rink, 104 Oliver St., North Tonawanda, where the Queen City Roller Girls are staging a match to benefit Planned Parenthood of Western New York. Doors open at 6:30 p. m., roller derby action starts at 7:30. Tickets are $12 in advance, $17 at the door.
The Queen City Roller Girls comprise four teams in a league run by the skaters for the skaters, who support it by paying dues, according to Maria Hollander, whose derby name is Crazy Legs #24. The best players form a travel team, which takes on teams from other cities across the U. S. and Canada.
Halftime entertainment in the match between two local teams—the Alley Katz and the Suicidal Saucies—includes a performance by the Stamp Lickers and the traditional Al Cohen’s Rye Bread toss. For info, visit www.qcrg.net.
