Completing Greenway should be at top of list
Updated: August 21, 2010, 4:33 AM
How can the Niagara River Greenway Commission be planning a water park in Wheatfield and an art museum in Lockport when the Greenway isn’t even complete? Ironically, these attractions won’t be accessible to green transportation.
Last summer my wife and I biked along the Greenway from Buffalo to Niagara Falls. Entering Wheatfield, the path ended and we were dumped onto the shoulder of a four-lane highway. Entering Niagara Falls, it became a two-lane highway with no shoulder. I had as much trouble biking west along the Erie Canal. There was a fine canalside trail until downtown Lockport, then high-speed country roads until the Niagara River.
When complete, the Greenway will be one of the world’s finest roads for non-motor travel—linking population centers, parks and one of the wonders of the world, with grand vistas every mile. Incomplete as it is, it’s nowhere near family-friendly. I hope the commission addresses its namesake before scattering resources on other attractions.
