So, welfare versus working is now a cost-saving measure. Who can place a monetary value on the dignity felt by anyone capable of earning a living for her family? If we close the door on day care funding for working mothers, we set up another generation of children dependent on welfare. I am tired of hearing that people don’t choose to work and would rather receive welfare, yet we pull the funding for day care.

The slogan “welfare to workfare” should read “who cares if you fail.” Welfare could never be cost effective, and shame on County Executive Chris Collins for saying so. He made millions by being a smart businessman, yet he falls short on knowing that people need to feel good about their ability to earn a paycheck versus government assistance. Why aren’t we thinking outside the box on keeping people employed?
