YOUNGSTOWN—A Youngstown couple avoided being scammed when they tried to sell their entertainment center on craigslist, Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said.

The couple, who had agreed to sell the furniture to a man for $1,000, received a check for $3,000. Deputies said the buyer told the couple the check was sent by his secretary by accident and advised them to cash it, pocket their $1,000 and return the $2,000 difference to the man’s mover in Denver, Colo., via Western Union.

The local residents were advised by sheriff’s deputies not to cash the $3,000 check—as well as another one that was sent.
