Day care owner faces 5 years on tax charge
Updated: August 21, 2010, 3:42 AM
The owner of a Buffalo child care business, who prosecutors say led a lavish lifestyle while cheating the government, pleaded guilty Friday to a felony tax charge.
Lachandra Martin-Davis, 39, of Amherst faces up to five years in prison and a$10,000 fine when she is sentenced March 29 by U. S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
As owner of Kiddieland Child Care Center on Main Street, which became Kiddieland Educational Center, Martin- Davis failed to turn over to the Internal Revenue Service any of the more than $230,000 in federal income, Social Security and Medicare withholding taxes she withheld from employees, said Assistant U. S. Attorney Marie P. Grisanti.
The crime took place from between 2000 and 2006, during which the defendant bought an expensive house, drove a Mercedes-Benz, wore costly furs and jewelry and bought a time share in Hawaii, the prosecutor said. Martin-Davis no longer operates the day care center.
