Five volunteer fire companies spent an hour and a half battling a fire that left an estimated $350,000 damage to a Clarence home before dawn Wednesday.

A female resident at 4945 Hillcrest Drive reported the fire in an attached garage shortly after 6:15 a. m., Amherst fire officials said. Clarence firefighters arriving at the scene found heavy fire conditions, with flames spreading into the home.

Clarence Fire Chief Chad Hawes requested mutual-aid help from four neighboring fire companies: Harris Hill, Clarence Center, Main-Transit and Newstead.

The Red Cross was called to assist the residents. The cause remains under investigation.
