The grande dame of Niagara Square is about to die; right now it’s on life support. The current owners are in bankruptcy and the courts have ordered a sale to be held Aug. 12.

To date, the bankruptcy trustee has indicated that there are no interested bidders for the venerable Statler.

One must ask why one of the most famous buildings in Buffalo is in danger of dying. Should we allow it to go the way of the Larkin warehouse, which we regret to this very day?

The answer is no. This patient must be saved. The building is not so sick that a team of well-trained doctors couldn’t cure it.

We need to call Drs. Byron Brown, Chris Collins, David Paterson and John Simpson — respectively, Buffalo mayor, Erie County executive, New York governor and University at Buffalo president — to hold a regional consultation to save the patient.

The biggest problem the patient has is that surgery will cost $200 million so that it can be taken off life support. The City of Buffalo needs to create an Urban Renewal District around the building so that eminent domain can be used to build needed parking which is the heart of the building’s needs.

Buffalo should redirect $1 million in Restore New York money to secure the building and repair the crumbling exterior. Once the patient is stabilized, we can then move forward with a plan that will cure the patient, not just treat the disease.

The best reuse of the building would be as a home for the new UB Law School. The university plans to move the law school from the North Campus to the South Campus.

But UB needs to rethink its position on the relocation and open a dialogue to save the Statler. The Statler is in the middle of the federal, state and city court system and the legal community. What better location could you ask for?

When training doctors, you train at a hospital. Why not train lawyers where they practice?

As part of its 2020 program, UB already has planned to move the law school to the Main Street campus. Downtown is an extension of the South Campus.

If UB truly wants to be a respected member of the community, it needs to help breathe new life into the Statler. We have made many mistakes in Buffalo –the stadium in Orchard Park, the UB campus in Amherst — so let’s not continue on that same course.

The four doctors need to come together and collaborate on a plan for our sick patient.

The last thing we need is to have the Statler listed in the obituaries.

Rocco Termini is president of Signature Development in Buffalo.
