PICTURE THIS—Countless are the photo opportunities at the Buffalo Zoo, so it should be a snap to get a great picture and enter it into the latest edition of the zoo’s amateur photo contest. You have from now until Dec. 31.
Photos can be submitted in five categories—best mammal; best reptile, amphibian or fish; best bird, plant or insect; zoo humor, with a caption; and best photo by a student 18 and younger. Cash prizes will be awarded in each category.
The fee is $10 for the first photo and $5 for each entry by the same contestant after that. Zoo members get one free entry. For info, call 995-6131 or visit www.buffalozoo.org.
LEFT BEHIND—Saturday is the 10th annual National Survivors of Suicide Day, dedicated to the loved ones left behind by 33,000 people who take their lives every year in the U. S.
This year, Buffalo Psychiatric Center is joining with centers in more than 200 cities across the nation and around the world in presenting a 90-minute healing broadcast by the American Society for Suicide Prevention, starting at 12:45 p. m. Doors to the center’s Butler Auditorium open at noon.
The program also includes a special ceremony of hope. Admission is free. For info and to register, call 816-2011.
TIME TO SHOP—St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 3275 Elmwood Ave., Town of Tonawanda, hosts a Christmas bazaar from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Saturday with theme baskets, books, vendors, baked goods, hot lunches and, of course, trash and treasures.
Our Lady of Pompeii School, 129 Laverack Ave., Lancaster, holds its 13th annual theme basket auction from 5:30 to 9:30 p. m. Saturday. Admission is $6—age 13 and above only— and includes 25 auction tickets. There also will be door prizes, a lottery board and food and beverages for purchase.
The Altar Society of Our Lady of Bistrica Croatian Catholic Church, 1619 Abbott Road, holds its annual bake sale and Books for Fun and gift sale from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Saturday in the Cardinal Stepinac Auditorium. The bake sale includes such treats as maple tortes, nut rolls, apple and cheese strudel, homemade sausage, and ethnic and American cakes and cookies. A raffle at 1 p. m. features 15 turkeys and a basket of cheer.
LONG ROAD BACK—A self-employed logger, Dean Janes of Brocton has been unable to work since May, when he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. Despite help from family and friends, Janes, a 1986 Brocton High School graduate and father of two teenage sons, has seen his medical expenses keep mounting.
A benefit to help pay for his treatment will be held from 6 to 10 p. m. Saturday in Brocton Post 434, American Legion, 110 W. Main St. Tickets are $10 and include pizza, wings, chili and music by DJ Hector. Drawings will be held for a 41-inch television, a truckload of firewood valued at $750 and an 870 Express Laminated Deer Gun. For info and donations, call 410-1360.
