NIAGARA FALLS—A woman swerving into oncoming traffic on Niagara Falls Boulevard said she was putting on her makeup and talking on her cell phone, state police said.

Tara C. Hayes, 22, of Lewiston, was charged with driving while intoxicated. She was pulled over by Troopers William L. Persinger and Ryan Burns about 12:40 a. m., after they observed her northbound vehicle crossing into the southbound lane, police said.

Hayes failed several field sobriety tests, and when told she was being arrested for driving while intoxicated, became belligerent and kicked Persinger in the shin, state police said.

Hayes also was charged with using a cell phone while driving, failure to keep right and resisting arrest.
