Sugar reduction effort turns ironic in war time
Updated: August 21, 2010, 2:55 AM
The recent article outlining some dentists’ plan to buy Halloween candy from their little patients explains that children get $1 a pound and a flashing toothbrush, maybe a chance to win tickets to a Sabres game and possible other little goodies.
It seems a laudable way to reduce sugar in kids’ diets. Where does the candy go? It will be donated to Operation Gratitude, and this group sends it to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of the sweets, the article notes, are not consumed by the military but are handed out to befriend kids in those war-torn countries.
Hmm, what’s wrong with this picture? Just asking.
