OLAF FUB SEZ: According to President Theodore Roosevelt, born on this date in 1858, “A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.”
FRIGHT NIGHT—The Halloween spirit will be on the screen and in the seats Saturday night in the Hamburg Palace Theater, 31 Buffalo St. Showing at midnight is that campy all-time favorite, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” complete with encouragement for audience participation and a costume contest, both overseen by a troupe of actors who regularly re-enact the film.
Fanciers of the truly bizarre will buy separate tickets for the theater’s 10 p. m. showing of an obscure independent 1960s film, the darkly humorous “Spider Baby.” A favorite of director Quentin Tarantino, it stars Lon Chaney Jr. and was written and directed by Jack Hill, who went on to direct “Coffy” and “Foxy Brown” in 1970s. Hill will donate the proceeds to the Academy Film Archive.
But that’s not all. Palace Theater impresario Jay Ruof reports that out on Buffalo Street that night a local dance troupe, Future Dance, will perform Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
THE PRICE IS RIGHT— It will be no tricks, all treats from 5 to 6:30 p. m. Wednesday as Middleport United Methodist Church, Park Avenue and South Vernon Street, holds its monthly free community dinner, sponsored by the church Mission Committee. The menu: chili, hamburger noodle soup, salad, corn bread and Anna Wallace’s lemon spice cake for dessert.
CRAFTS GALORE— Crafters still have time to get a table at the annual Fall Craft Show from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. Sunday sponsored by the St. Andrew’s Holy Name Society in the Town of Tonawanda. For details, call Joe Custodi at 417-3939. For those who simply want to come and buy, admission is $2. It’s being held in the Monsignor Donovan Center, Elmwood Avenue and Sheridan Drive.
GIVE A TOOT—Volunteers are needed for the annual Joe Benet Memorial Kazoo Fest, a holiday tradition in shopping malls from here to Syracuse that benefits Camp Good Days&Special Times. It runs Thursdays through Sundays from the day after Thanksgiving to the day before Christmas Eve.
Locally, the Kazoo Fest will set up in front of Lord&Taylor in Walden Galleria, Cheektowaga. For information about volunteering, call volunteer coordinator Shannon Grieve at (585) 624-5555 or visit www.campgooddays.org.

Dec. 26 in the Pearl Street Grill& Brewery, 76 Pearl St. Tickets are $45 and include three hours of open bar, appetizers and dinner. Reservations are due by Dec. 1.
