A Buffalo man has been charged with setting a fire at 82 Mineral Springs Road while residents were inside early Sunday.

Craig J. Whalen, 33, of Seneca Street, faces felony charges of arson, burglary and reckless endangerment. He is accused of sneaking into the residence at about 1 a. m. and setting a fire that caused $50,000 damage and routed residents from the building.

Buffalo firefighters said the blaze started in the basement and reached the second floor of the 2z-story structure. The Red Cross was called in to assist two occupants.

Police allege Whalen also caused grave risk to firefighters.
