The Akron Village Board on Monday adopted a local law that restricts where registered sex offenders can reside in the village.

Village Attorney Daniel D. Shonn Jr. said the law extends provisions of the state Megan’s Law by barring residences of registered sex offenders from being within 1,500 feet “of places where children congregate like schools, playgrounds and churches.”

Police Chief Richard C. Lauricella said that no registered sex offender currently resides within the village. A year ago, there was a convicted sex offender residing on Parkview Drive, the chief said, and that man has moved to Niagara Falls.

The penalty for failing to comply with the law is a $1,500 fine and/or jail time.

The board’s unanimous action followed a public hearing at which no one spoke.

Agreed that Mayor Carl E. Patterson and Village Clerk Daniel P. Borchert should draft a letter to State Sen. Michael

H. Razenhofer, R-Amherst, and the leadership of the State Senate “to reconcile issues” so it can “proceed with its responsibilities to run the state.” The Senate has been deadlocked for four weeks since a Democrat defected to the Republicans and set up a 31-31 split between the two parties.

Directed Shonn to send a letter to the state Department of Transportation that “from a legal standpoint,” it has created a “dangerous situation” by not posting no-parking signs on the curved portion of Buell Street (Route 93) near Brooklyn Street. A village resident said that there is a “visibility problem” at the curve, which poses safety issues for motorists.

Directed village engineers William Schutt & Associates to begin applying for permits from the state and Erie County for the rehabilitation of the State Street Bridge, which has been closed since last fall. The firm is also to proceed with preliminary engineering work, not to exceed $4,300, for repairing the bridge, which crosses Murder Creek connecting Skyline Drive and East Avenue.

Approved awarding a $14,300 contract to low bidder Stantec Construction of Rochester to do the site survey for the public works complex that the village is building with the Town of Newstead on 22 acres at Clarence Center and Hake roads. Stantec is also doing the design work for the estimated $3.5 million project. The cost of the site survey will be split evenly with Newstead.
