Who done it? Who murdered Maggie Renttib? Was it Blanche Bacchus marketing whiz? Or Rusty Dusty Dustin Cooper, her former love interest?

Have fun finding out on the third annual “Hallowine” event on Saturday and Sunday along the Niagara Wine Trail in Niagara County. Think of it as trick-or-treating for adults. (Maybe even dress up as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple.) You and your sleuth friends can hit up all the wineries in Niagara County looking for clues and tasting wines.

Start at any one of the participating wineries — Arrowhead Spring Vineyards, Eveningside Vineyards, Freedom Run Winery, Honeymoon Trail Winery, Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, Niagara Landing Wine Cellars, Schulze Vineyards and Winery, Spring Lake Winery, Vizcarra Vineyards, Warm Lake Estate and Winery at Marjim Manor — where your $20 ticket gets you a commemorative wine glass and informative packet. (A special “Designated Driver” ticket is $15.)

Then head off to the other wineries to question the “suspects” and collect clues. At your last winery, be sure to turn in your guess for “whodunit” for a chance to win prizes.

“I recommend that people come both days to see all the wineries and meet all the characters,” says Anne Schulze of Schulze Vineyards & Winery. “Your $20 ticket is good for Saturday and Sunday.”

The murder mystery is different each year. This year’s story, “Who Killed Maggie Renttib,” was written by Margo Bittner of Marjim Manor Winery in Appleton.

“Margo gave each suspect a name that comes from the wineries and their characteristics,” says Schulze.

For instance, at Schulze’s winery, visitors will meet Merry Tager, a character based on its Meritage wine. Manford Mannerly will greet guests at Freedom Run, where they carry Manning Manor Blanc. Look for Della Waring at Honeymoon Trail Winery and Honey Mead at Spring Lake Winery.

Tickets are available at the door, but advance purchase is recommended, as the event is very busy. Last year about 1,800 people participated, and more are expected this year.
