OLAF FUB SEZ: According to newspaper columnist and humorist Art Buchwald, born on this date in 1925, “Whether it’s the best of times or the worst of times, it’s the only time we’ve got.”
STAR SEARCH—Ready to help make Hollywood dreams come true are Frank Rossi, the Buffalo-based acting coach who has mentored more than 1,000 actors, and Craig Scime, an actor and TV host on the West Coast who some may remember as host of “U’s Place” on Channel 29 back when he was an honor student at Medaille College.
They’re teaming up for an in-depth two-day workshop for aspiring actors Friday and Saturday in the Cullen Center at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, 845 Kenmore Ave., Town of Tonawanda, along with writer-producer Laurence Andries (“Six Feet Under” and “Alias”) and actor and sketch comedian Doug DeBeech (also “Six Feet Under” and “General Hospital”). Fee is $299. For details, visit www.jointheworkshop.com.
EDIBLE EDIFICES— Bakers get a chance to become architects once again as Gilda’s Club of Western New York gears up for its eighth annual gingerbread house competition and silent auction. Amateurs and pros are welcome, judging will be in three categories, and cash prizes will be awarded. All of the houses then will be auctioned to benefit Gilda’s Club, which serves those living with cancer.
Details, rules and entry forms are available by calling 332-5900, Ext. 203, or visiting www.gildasclubwny.org. Deadline for entry forms is Nov. 13. Winners will be announced and the silent auction will begin at a gala cocktail reception Dec. 4.

STEPPING OUT—The Home School Association of St. John Vianney School, 2950 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park, hosts its annual Autumn Dance in the gym Friday evening.
Doors open at 7 p. m., and the music starts at 8. Tickets are $17 advance, $20 at the door, and include draft beer, wine, pop and snacks. For information and tickets, call HSA President Jean McCormick at 677-0775.
FOUR-FOOTED FRIENDS—Your cats and dogs have happy lives, but how about those critters living in the country? Helping them out is the annual Walk for Farm Animals, which starts at 11 a. m. Saturday at Unity Church, 1243 Delaware Ave. Pre-register for $15 and be sure of getting a T-shirt. Wait until the day of the walk and it’s $20, and T-shirts might run out in your size.
It is sponsored by Farm Sanctuary, a national farm animal protection organization, which works to stop cruel practices in the meat industry and maintains shelters in Watkins Glen and California. To register, visit www.firstgiving.com/farmsanctuary or e-mail local walk coordinators Angela Banaszak and Jeffery Termini at buffalo@walkforfarmanimals.org.
