Ihasz elected School Board president
Updated: August 21, 2010, 12:27 AM
FREDONIA — Daniel Ihasz is the new president of the Fredonia Central School Board.
Meeting in a reorganization session Tuesday night, board members voted, 4-3, to place Ihasz at the helm of the board.
Ihasz accepted the nomination and took his oath of office via videoconference. He currently is in Colorado teaching vocal music to college-age students at Rocky Ridge Music Center.
Ihasz, a voice professor at Fredonia State College, conducted the meeting Tuesday night via computer. Ihasz begins his fifth year on the Board of Education.
The three board members voting against Ihasz supported longtime board member Roberta Coniglio, also nominated for the president’s post. Coniglio was unanimously elected board vice president.
At its next meeting, Aug. 18 in Room 636 of the high school, the board will again discuss allowing new tuition students into the school district. The board voted in March to grandfather current tuition students but to disallow any new tuition students — thus eventually phasing out tuition students altogether.
Board member Michael Bobseine strongly supported reopening the issue and handed board members a proposed tuition policy that he said was crafted mostly from the district’s former tuition policy.
“Our district is an excellent one, and people want to come here,” said Bobseine, adding that tuition students are a source of income and help stabilize enrollment.
Outgoing board President Edith Byrne noted that the board assigned a subcommittee to study the tuition issue for more than a year. The board’s decision in March to phase out the program was based on that group’s findings.
Anita Ray, a district resident, remarked during the public portion of the meeting that during the year the subcommittee was meeting, board members who were concerned about the issue could have joined the subcommittee to weigh in.
In other matters, new board member Thomas Hawk was appointed Erie 2 Chautauqua Cattaraugus BOCES liaison for the board.
