LEWISTON—A ceremony to mark the unveiling of Western New York’s newest large-scale landmark, “The Freedom Crossing Monument,” will be held at 7 p. m. today at Lewiston Landing on North Water Street.

The $220,000 bronze monument commemorates the Underground Railroad. Sculptor Susan Geissler, who grew up in Lewiston, was commissioned to design and create the monument, at the foot of Center Street. The unveiling will be preceded by a re-enactment featuring Underground Station master Josiah Tryon, portrayed by Tim Henderson, helping fugitive slaves into his rowboat before taking them to Canada and freedom.

For those unable to attend, a live video of the dedication will be available via Web cam at historiclewiston.org, and an audio broadcast will be accessible by calling (641) 594-7000, and using the passcode 925-2124#.
