OLAFFUB SEZ: According to comedian Lenny Bruce, born Leonard Alfred Schneider on this date in 1925, “I won’t say ours was a tough school, but we had our own coroner.”

GET SMART—If cold weather sharpens the mind, this could be the right time to take the American Mensa Admission Test, Mensa being the nonpolitical international organization for people who score at or above the 98th percentile on this IQ test. The local Mensa group has about 280 members and is one of 134 groups nationwide.

Next test day is Saturday in three local locations—at 9 a. m. in the Community Room of the McKinley Mall in Hamburg; at 1 p. m. in the BrightPlanIT Training Facility, 2810 Sweet Home Road, Amherst; and at 2 p. m. in Tower Lounge of Reed Library at Fredonia State College.

Fee is $40. Photo ID is required. Anyone 14 and older is welcome, but those under 18 need parental permission. Walk-ins are OK, but it’s better if you call Jaclyn McKewan at 630-1694 or e-mail testing@wny.us.mensa.org . For general info, visit www.us.mensa.org.

PULLING TOGETHER

—Back before he got married three years ago, you might find Shane Full of Kenmore in Frizzy’s in Allentown. However, since May 31, when he was hit by a car in Rochester while taking his 2-year-old son to an air show, he has been in Erie County Medical Center, undergoing intensive brain trauma rehab, with doctors, nurses and therapists attending him daily.

Meanwhile, his wife, Kari, is expecting twin girls in December and is unable to work. So friends, family and the folks at Frizzy’s are holding a benefit event in the club at 140 Allen St. from 2 to 8 p. m. Sunday. Tickets are $20.

ALONE TOGETHER—

Sunday is the annual potluck dinner for the Association of Widowed People, who will gather at 6 p. m. in St. David’s Episcopal Church, 3951 Seneca St. near Southgate Plaza, West Seneca. All widowed people are welcome. For info, call

823-3614.

PICK OF THE CROP—

It’s Apple Festival time from 4 to 7 p. m. Wednesday at Covenant United Methodist Church, 539 Main St., West Seneca. For $8.50, they offer a roast beef, pork or turkey sandwich on a roll, plus potatoes or coleslaw and dessert—apple crisp, apple pie or a warm apple sundae— and a beverage, which includes cider. While you’re there, visit the Apple Bin for baked apple goods, apple crafts and just plain apples.

WINNERS WANTED—

More than 150 prizes will be up for bids as the Valley Community Association holds its annual silent auction Wednesday in the Valley Community Center, 93 Leddy St. near South Park Avenue and Elk Street. Doors open at 2 p. m. for viewing and bidding, drawings start at 7. The kitchen opens at 5 to serve food and beverages. Chances are $5 for 25, and you need not be present to win. For info, call 823-4707, Ext. 4.

STARTING UP—Hoping to transform the less-than-wonderful area around the boat launch at the foot of Ontario Street into a spiffy park with better facilities for fishing, boating, walking and bicycling is the Black Rock Canal Park Steering Committee.

To start making those plans a reality, the committee is hosting an Oktoberfest fundraiser from 5 to 8 p. m. Saturday in the nearby Flying Bison Brewery, 491 Ontario St. A $10 donation includes snack food and two drink tickets, with additional beverage tickets available. An auction includes gift certificates and an autographed Guy Fieri cookbook. For info, call Stevan Stipanovich at 830-4267 or Sharon Czajkowski at 877-4912.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY— Shirley Kreppel, Alvin H. Hargro, Sabrina Niver, Luz Pierla-McGlion, Jennifer Schaller, Paul Safe, Joe Sasiadek, Kaitlin Safe, Davis Jajkowski, Jazzy Surles, Jordie Surles, Andrew Tomaka, Chris Panek, Diane Grant, John Garvey, Rebecca Schafer, Lauren Farry, Ron Wanat, Chris Catalfamo, Ian Sabadasz, Julie Zenger, Cathie Lannen, Mary Rickard, Bruce Andriatch, Harvey Garrett and Dick Zanelotti.
