Updated: August 21, 2010, 12:05 AM
FREDONIA — Fredonia School Board President Edith Byrne received the Master of Boardsmanship award during a meeting of the board Tuesday night.
The New York State School Boards Association award was presented by Thomas DeJoe, Area 3 director of the state organization and a member of the Brocton School Board. DeJoe also presented Byrne the Leadership Development Recognition Program award for completing eight courses dealing with school governance.
Byrne is beginning her third five-year term on the Fredonia School Board.
Byrne, who said she was honored by the awards, noted that completing the course work took years.
Byrne said that although she will serve five more years on the board, she has decided not to serve as president again. “It’s someone else’s turn.”
Also recognized during a plaque presentation was outgoing board member Kelly Crise, who has served on the board for a decade.
Superintendent Paul DiFonzo called Crise “a wonderful board member, always putting children first.”
“It has been an honor to serve the children and taxpayers,” Crise said.
In other matters:
Business Administrator John Forbes said he is studying cooperative bids for gasoline and diesel fuel with the Village of Fredonia and Dunkirk city schools to save money.
Scot Stutzman was appointed assistant high school principal at an annual salary of $71,000.
The board approved the intermunicipal agreement between the Fredonia and Brocton Central school districts to share cafeteria management services, while still retaining their separate cafeterias. Judy Oakes, cafeteria manager at Fredonia district, will oversee the two operations.
Commencement begins at 1 p. m. Sunday in King Concert Hall at Fredonia State College.
The annual board reorganization meeting will be held at 6 p. m. July 7 in Room 636 of the high school. The meeting will employ videoconferencing to conduct business.
