Cake creations

The newly opened Zillycakes (1008 Elmwood Ave.) offers many, many variations on the cake theme: wedding cakes, sculpted cakes, cupcake towers, large cupcakes, teeney weenie cupcakes and even a takeout cupcake bar in which you choose from five flavors and several buttercream frostings and toppings to adorn them. Decisions, decisions.

There’s one small booth here, where you can sit and enjoy tea or coffee accompanied by your choice of sweet things. The place also offers classes, tastings and space for private parties. Summer hours are noon to 9 p. m. Tuesday through Friday; 10 a. m. to 6 p. m. Saturday; and noon to 4 p. m. Sunday. Visit

Western New York was not alone in having a successful Restaurant Week this spring. Similar bargain-priced deals did well all over the country, so now the concept is being expanded (or contracted, if you will).

According to reports in the New York Times, here’s the deal: In New York City, Washington, D. C., and Chicago, they’re scheduling kids’ restaurant weeks in which children under 12 pay the price of their age for dinner at participating dining places (parents pay a discounted price as well).
