Man convicted of DWI in crash faces 7 years
Updated: August 20, 2010, 11:53 PM
MINEOLA (AP)—A Long Island man accused of slamming into a police cruiser was convicted Monday of driving while intoxicated, assault and other charges.
A jury in Nassau County convicted Rahiem Griffin on its second day of deliberations. Griffin faces seven years in prison when he is sentenced on July 22.
Nassau County Police Officer Kenneth Baribault had stopped a driver for suspected drunken driving in May 2008 on the Long Island Expressway when a vehicle driven by Griffin slammed into the rear of the police car.
Baribault, who can only speak in single syllables and is partially paralyzed as a result of the collision, made a brief appearance at the trial last week, demonstrating his injuries during testimony by his physician.
Griffin’s attorney, Gerard Brogdon, said he intended to appeal.
