Pittsburgh 6, Detroit 3: Tigers starter Dontrelle Willis fought with his control for the third consecutive start by walking eight in 3c innings, leading to all of Pittsburgh’s scoring.

Philadelphia 11, Boston 6: Jimmy Rollins homered as part of a six-run seventh inning by the Phillies, who avoided a three-game sweep.

Baltimore 11, Atlanta 2: Ty Wigginton hit two home runs for the Orioles, who have scored 19 runs in the past two games after scoring just 19 runs in the previous 11 games.

Tampa Bay 5, Washington 4: Pinch hitter Willy Aybar got a lucky bounce, doubling off the third base bag in the eighth inning, and the Rays completed a sweep of the lowly Nationals.

White Sox 5, Milwaukee 4: Chicago’s A. J. Pierzynski singled with two outs in the ninth inning off previously perfect Trevor Hoffman, driving in the go-ahead run. Hoffman came in with a string of 18 scoreless innings.

Kansas City 7, Cincinnati 1: Brian Bannister pitched eight sharp innings for the Royals. Reds starter Johnny Cueto lowered his NL-leading ERA to 2.17 despite the loss.

San Francisco 7, Oakland 1: Nate Schierholtz hit an inside-the-park three-run homer to power the Giants.

Chicago Cubs 3, Minnesota 2: Ryan Theriot drove in Derrek Lee with a bases-loaded single with one out in the ninth, and the Cubs snapped a four-game losing skid.

L. A. Dodgers 6, Texas 3: Chad Billingsley earned his NL-best ninth victory, retiring 16 of 17 batters after an early error put the Dodgers behind, and Casey Blake drove in four runs for Los Angeles.

L. A. Angels 6, San Diego 0: Juan Rivera homered twice as the Angels completed a three-game sweep.

Colorado 7, Seattle 1: Garrett Atkins and Todd Helton had three hits each and the Rockies matched a franchise record with their 11th straight win.

National League

Houston 8, Arizona 3: Brian Moehler scattered six hits over six innings and Hunter Pence broke out of an 0-for-12 slump with a home run for the Astros, who won for the fourth time in five games.

Around the horn

Chicago Cubs: Fired hitting coach Gerald Perry after 2z seasons in an attempt to spark a sputtering offense that ranks among the NL’s worst at 4.2 runs per game.
