Move over eBay. A number of new Web sites have sprung up to provide another venue for auctioning items and scoring bargains.

The July issue of ShopSmart, which is published by Consumer Reports, explored four of these sites.

Here is what the magazine found:

Overstock.com: Great for designer labels. You’ll find Prada pumps and Gucci satchels as well as auction-only merchandise. Shipping can be expensive — as much as $9.15 for a pair of leather flip flops, the magazine found.

Also, return policies vary. Still, there are plenty of bargains to be found on this site.

Sam’s Club Auctions: Best for big-ticket items such as vacuums, comforters, TVs, tents, and much more. The magazine found steep discounts.

For instance, the top bid on a 50-inch Philips HD plasma TV was $301, which is about one-third the normal price. But you have to be a Sam’s Club member to bid, which could run you $40.

And if you need to send anything back, you can do so within 30 days, but not to the store. Nonetheless, you could save tons of money here.

Shopgoodwill.com: A great place to find collectibles such as tea cups and decorative plates. You will also find inexpensive clothing on this site. However, everything is sold “as is” and cannot be returned.

So make sure you enlarge the photos to examine the items carefully before you buy them.

Ubid.com: This is the place to go for electronics. The site sells excess inventory from manufacturers such as Apple and Hewlett-Packard.

A lot of it is refurbished, which means that warranties vary. But many of the items are backed by the manufacturer for 90 days.
