HARTLAND — A Rural/Metro ambulance driver fired after he was charged with stealing $55 from an unconscious crash victim in late April is now under investigation for allegedly stealing from a second victim who crashed in front of his house, Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said.

Anthony L. Murphy, 29, is accused of stealing cash from a critically injured 24- year-old car crash victim April 28 on Plank Road, after the man hit a bridge on Stone Road in the Town of Lockport and was ejected through the passenger-side window.

Murphy was charged with petit larceny in that case.

Rural/Metro spokesman Jay Smith told The Buffalo News that Smith was dismissed after the arrest and fired May 14 after the company conducted its own investigation.

“As you can imagine, we can’t tolerate this type of incident,” Smith said. “This is when people are at their most vulnerable. Patient care is tantamount to our industry.”

Rural/Metro will continue to cooperate with the sheriff’s investigation, Smith said. He added that the company is unaware of any other similar reports of thefts involving Murphy except one that deputies started to investigate earlier this month.

Investigator Raymond Degan is handling that case, which involves a 53-year-old Olcott woman who suffered a head injury in a crash with an intoxicated driver in front of Murphy’s house June 1.

A witness told deputies that Murphy went through the woman’s purse while she was unconscious on a stretcher. The victim made the report to authorities June 5.

Murphy, a former member of the Hartland Volunteer Fire Department, has not been charged in that case but it is under investigation, Degan told The News.

A Hartland fire official said Murphy has not served with the department for several years.
