Construction set for Angola senior living center
Updated: August 20, 2010, 11:42 PM
Ground will be broken at 2 p. m. Wednesday for the Holly Senior Center, a federal project that will provide housing and care services for people at least 62 years old.
The center will be at 174 N. Main St., Angola, and will provide individual housing for 29 senior residents with an on-site certified apartment manager. Services at the Holly Senior Center will be provided by People Inc., a Department of Housing and Urban Development neighborhood networks provider.
Angola Mayor Hub Frawley said at Monday night’s Village Board meeting that similar projects have been attempted in Angola before, most recently in the 1990s, but that none was completed. The HUD grant application that would make possible the Holly Senior Center was originally rejected, but the village decided to reapply.
“One of my campaign promises was that I was going to do everything I could to get senior housing,“ said Frawley.
Other funding became available from the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning. Frawley said the site has many advantages, such as proximity to Angola’s business district and a flat foundation, improving handicapped access. Frawley also acknowledged that the Holly Senior Center has increased local business interest, citing a group considering options on a 2010 reopening of the property that formerly housed the Yellow Goose convenience store on Main Street in Angola. The expected completion date for the Holly Senior Center is next April.
People Inc. operates a number of local senior housing units, including Robin Road Senior Housing in Amherst and Iris Housing in Hamburg. Rent for housing at the Holly Senior Center will be based on 30 percent of the resident’s income. Applications for housing can be obtained by contacting Wendy Burgio at 817-9022.
In other business, the board approved this year’s annual contribution of $850 to the Angola Park and Gazebo. The money will support the Summer 2009 Lawn Chair concert series.
