SAFETY FIRST—“What to Do If a Child Chokes” is one of several first-aid demonstrations scheduled for the Lancaster Volunteer Ambulance Corps open house from 11 a. m. to 5 p. m. Saturday in corps headquarters on Embry Place.

“A choking child could die in less than 10 minutes,” says paramedic Justin Ward. “We’re urging parents, grandparents, teachers, baby sitters to attend the session at 11 a. m. We’ll demonstrate how to clear the airway and how to resuscitate a child, which is different than the techniques used on adults. And most importantly, the participants will have a chance to practice on first-aid mannequins.”

Other sessions include “Summer Safety” from 1 to 3 p. m., “A Mock Code Demonstration” from 2 to 4 p. m. and “A Teddy Bear Clinic,” which will be conducted throughout the day by the corps’ Explorer Post for children who bring in a doll or stuffed animal to practice medical treatment. There also will be blood pressure checks, free souvenirs and refreshments.

FOND FAREWELL— Friends of Erie County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Frankenberger are staging a retirement party for him from 4 to 11 p. m. Friday in the Bison City Rod& Gun Club on Ohio Street as he leaves after a 30-year career. Long a popular court deputy, he moved to the Holding Center staff after the agency turned over court work to the state court system’s security force.

PAWS FOR A CAUSE— Fran’s Gifts and News in Apple-Tree Business Park, 2875 Union Road, Cheektowaga, will celebrate its 24th anniversary from 11 a. m. to 4 p. m. Wednesday the same way the shop has celebrated its previous anniversaries— with Fran-A-Palooza, a festival that supports a charity.

This year’s charity is Save-A-Pet, a volunteer group that does not operate a shelter, but rather keeps its needy cats and dogs in foster homes until they can find new places to live. The group also educates youngsters on good pet ownership and offers spay and neutering clinics.

The festival features a large silent auction, raffles, chocolate candy sales and a 50-50 split club drawing. There also will be store sales, giveaways and, from 11 a. m. to 3 p. m., refreshments. Admission is free. For info, call Carole Gilbert at 681-9460.
