American League

Oakland 5, Cleveland 2: Gio Gonzalez pitched six strong innings for his first win of the season. He allowed two runs, six hits, and struck out a career-high eight for his second career win.

Boston 8, Seattle 4: David Ortiz had a tying RBI single and Mark Kotsay added a key two-run hit during a five-run seventh inning, and the Red Sox avoided a three-game sweep.

Kansas City 6, Chicago White Sox 3: Alberto Callaspo got his fourth RBI in two days and Miguel Olivo hit a two-run homer to help the Royals.

Minnesota 6, Detroit 2: Justin Morneau punctuated a productive series—and celebrated another All-Star Game selection—with a two-run homer for the Twins.

L. A. Angels 9, Baltimore 6: Vladimir Guerrero hit a tying two-run homer in his first game back in right field, and the Angels took advantage of a wild Orioles bullpen.

Texas 5, Tampa Bay 2: Scott Feldman allowed three hits in six innings as the Rangers completed a three-game sweep. The Rays lost their fourth in a row and fell six behind Boston in the AL East.

National League

Florida 5, Pittsburgh 0: Ricky Nolasco struck out 12 in eight innings to win his fourth straight start. The Marlins won their fourth consecutive series at home.

St. Louis 10, Cincinnati 1: Colby Rasmus’ homer started St. Louis’ eight-run onslaught against slumping righty Bronson Arroyo, and the Cardinals got another solid start from Chris Carpenter.

Philadelphia 2, N. Y. Mets 0: Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley each homered off Johan Santana as the Phillies finished a sweep of the Mets, who suffered their eighth loss in 11 games.

Chicago Cubs 8, Milwaukee 2: Ted Lilly pitched effectively into the seventh inning and Derrek Lee hit a two-run homer as the Cubs closed to within a game and a half of Milwaukee in the NL Central.

Arizona 4, Colorado 3: Mark Reynolds hit a three-run homer and Felipe Lopez broke a tie with an RBI single for the D-backs, who notched their first series win since mid-June at Kansas City. Washington 5, Atlanta 3: Scott Olsen pitched into the ninth inning and newly acquired Nyjer Morgan had three hits for the Nationals.

Houston 7, San Francisco 1: Roy Oswalt pitched eight solid innings in the Astros’ victory, while Miguel Tejada, Hunter Pence and Jason Michaels supplied solo home runs.

L. A. Dodgers 7, San Diego 6 (13): James Loney led off the 13th inning with a homer to give the Dodgers a win after squandering a 6-0 lead. Manny Ramirez of Los Angeles sat the game out.

Around the horn

Cleveland Indians: Eric Wedge’s job is safe for the rest of the season. Cleveland General Manager Mark Shapiro said Sunday that the manager and his coaching staff would remain in their jobs with the last-place Indians.

New York Yankees: Starter Chien-Ming Wang went back on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain, and manager Joe Girardi said he’s not sure how long the right-hander will be out.
