PALMYRA (AP)—Authorities plan to close a stretch of the Erie Canal for a second try at recovering a sunken dredge barge.

The New York State Canal Corp. planned to begin lowering the water level by about five feet between Lock E-29 in Palmyra and Lock E-28B in Newark at 10 p. m. Sunday. That portion of the canal is set to close at 7 a. m. today for several days.

The 90-foot-long, state-owned barge sank June 13 while docked in Palmyra, 20 miles east of Rochester. Salvage crews made an unsuccessful attempt to raise it last month.

Canal Corporation director Carmella Mantello said authorities won’t know why the barge sank until it is out of the water.
