“Adrift in Macao” is currently on stage in MusicalFare Theatre through May 25. Here are some notes about the play. Read the Gusto review of “Adrift in Macao” here.

Back in 1990, Christopher Durang’s two-part laughter, “Beyond Therapy” and “Laughing Wild,” graced the late Studio Arena Theatre stage, causing audience tsk-tsks for language plus a good deal of bail-out at intermissions. Studio Arena resisted a Durang night with reins because that can never work. Studio Arena collected brickbats for the two shows, but they were two of the funniest productions in their long and lauded history.

Does Richard Rodgers - composer of more than 900 songs, involved with 43 Broadway musicals - have any more grandsons? We should hope so. “Adrift in Macao” composer Peter Rodgers Melnick is one and Adam Guettel - “Light in the Piazza” - is another.

Inevitably, multitalented actress, singer and dancer Bethany Burrows, after applauded performances elsewhere, has found her way to MusicalFare; she’s a find.

Opening night for “Adrift in Macao” was an occasion to give an appreciative nod and a champagne toast to MusicalFare’s alterations and a new performing space, a spacious, airy cabaret already scheduled for tributes honoring George Gershwin, Louis Prima, poetess Emily Dickinson, an original musical parody, and intimate piano and vocal stylings with Barbara Levy Daniels, Chuck Basil and KerryKate Abel. A five-show season, including “The Drowsy Chaperone” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’” also was announced.
