Story tools:

Sometimes, the process of creating an artwork is more important than the final work of art itself. Sometimes, it’s just a means to an end. And other times, as in Meg Knowles’ and Felice Koenig’s collaborative project “Process vs. Product: Two Documentaries Confront Two Paintings,” the process of painting itself is both the main point of interest and the self-conscious subject matter. Koenig, over a period of seven months, created two paintings by painstakingly layering dots of paint over one another. The act of applying the paint to the surface created curious, topographic-looking final results, but also served as a kind of meditative activity for Koenig. And While Koenig painted, Knowles, a longtime local artist well known for work in film and video, recorded the whole process with her camera. The result is an exhibition that pits painting against video in the hopes of encouraging reflection about how an artist arrives at her final product. The show, which opened last Friday at the Olean Public Library (134 N. Second St., Olean), runs through July 31. For more information, call 372-0200 or visit www.oleanlibrary.org . —Colin Dabkowski
