Oh, Brothers
The JoBros give fans a Disney-fied look at life on the road
They’re cute, wholesome and oh-so-cuddly. The Jonas Brothers — perhaps the hottest band in the universe — and adorable Disney starlets Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez star in two of the week’s biggest DVD releases.
“Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience Deluxe Extended Movie in 3-D” gives fans a front-row seat on the trio’s successful 2008 summer concert tour “Burning Up,” which stopped at Darien Lake last August. Kevin, Joe and Nick sing and dance their way through the concert film that is intercut with staged “behind-thescenes footage.”
The “extended” part of this DVD is the performance of two songs not seen in the original theatrical version: “Can’t Have You” and “A Little Bit Longer.”
Disney is releasing the movie in a three-disc Bluray/ DVD combo pack ($44.99) that has both the 3-D version of the movie (plus four pairs of paper 3-D glasses) and the 2-D movie, plus a standard-definition DVD and a digital copy of the film so the kids can watch the JoBros on a computer, iPod or practically anywhere else.
Considering the crazy popularity of the teen trio, you would expect the movie’s DVD release to be loaded with extras, but it’s not. There are two bonus songs (“Love Bug” and “Shelf”) and the short featurette “Up Close and Personal With the Jonas Brothers,” which is basically a very short version of the movie with more behind-thescenes footage, including rehearsals, stunt practice (watch the boys do somersaults and flips) and plenty of gushing about the fans. (“We have the most loyal and dedicated fans on the planet.”)
“Dylan & Cole Sprause Blu-ray Is Suite” is a shameless promotion to get the kids to talk mom and dad into buying a Blu-ray player.
• “Princess Protection Plan” ($29.99) is an amiable Disney Channel original movie that only premiered on the network a week ago.
Selena Gomez stars as Louisiana teen Carter Mason, whose father (Tom Verica) is an agent in the covert international organization Princess Protection Plan. His latest mission is to rescue Princess Rosalinda Marie Montoya Fiore (Demi Lovato), who is in danger only weeks before she is to become queen of the tiny country of Costa Luna.
This time, though, Dad brings his work home with him to keep her safe. “Rosie” has to blend in with all the other high school kids (not an easy task) and complicates Carter’s quiet life. Still, there will be fun and bonding along with the way, with plenty of lessons to learn.
The DVD comes with a “BFF” necklace set to share with that special friend, the “One and the Same” music video and two featurettes.
“Royal & Loyal BFFs” is a playful look at the relationship between the two look-alike teens who have been best friends since working together on the PBS series “Barney and Friends.” Gomez and Lovato dish about their friendship and their co-stars, and they share “secrets” like favorite bands (wonder if the Jonas Brothers will make the cut?), clothing and crushes.
In “A Royal Reality,” real teen princess India Oxenberg (the daughter of actress Catherine Oxenberg from “Dynasty”) talks about her life, princess myths (don’t expect servants), the role of the modern princess (ditto on fairy-tale castles) and how to find your inner princess. (Hint: Be confident and be kind to others.) India also shows off some of her royal pieces, including her mom’s tiara.
