Oliver’s twist
Since dissolving his much-loved band Go, Dog, Go! several years back and heading for the Boston area, Michael Oliver has only sporadically returned to Buffalo to perform his eminently lovable brand of guitar-based power-pop. Though the musicians he has worked with now live in separate states, the musical bonds Oliver formed in the latter ’90s have proven to be sturdy ones. Oliver and Co. have an uncanny ability to pick up right up where they left off, regardless of how much time has passed since their last outing. One of those outings will take place on Saturday evening in the Tralf (622 Main St.), whenOliver— a former Catholic priest—leads his newly formed outfit, the appropriately named Sacred Band, through some Go, Dog, Go! favorites and brand new material from a forthcoming disc. The band—which, I’m guessing, is named after the Sacred Band of Thebes, an elite force in the Greek army, circa 4th century B. C., probably with the Oliverian tongue planted firmly in cheek—reunites Oliver with old friends bassist Michael Swain and keyboardist Paul Zablotsky, and adds to the musical stew the contributions of esteemed guitarist Jim Whitford, guitarist/vocalist Erin O’Brien and drummer/vocalist Rob Lynch. Doors open at 7 p. m.; the show begins at 8 p. m. Ticketmaster is handling the tickets. A Potter’s Field will kick off the proceedings. —Jeff Miers
