Short Orders on local dining

Story tools:

Verbena news: Many new plans are afoot at Verbena (930 Maple Road, Amherst). Executive Chef Bruce Wiezalla has scheduled a wine dinner to be held at 7 p. m. Monday.

The menu includes chilled asparagus soup, sweet butter-poached lobster tail, crisp sweetbreads, roast lamb of spring lamb and dark chocolate passion fruit trifle, with appropriate wines accompanying each course. The price is $70 per person. For reservations, call 580-3125.

Also, at the restaurant from Sundays through Thursdays, a three-course prix fixe dinner will be offered for $35 per person. The menu will offer a choice of entrees and change from week to week according to the seasonal market. For further information, visit www.verbenadining.com .

Glen Iris opens

It really must be spring. The Glen Iris Inn in Castile opened for the season on Good Friday and will stay open through October. The dining room, Caroline’s, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, with a wide selection of popular favorites to choose from.

The most memorable thing about the Inn, however, is its location in the middle of beautiful Letchworth Park overlooking the Middle Falls of the Genesee River. This old-fashioned, antique-filled house also offers lodging and is located on the estate of the late William Pryor Letchworth. It even offers veranda dining in season.

For further information and for reservations, call (585) 493-2622 or visit www.glenirisinn.com .

On the May menu

And here’s some other notes to write in next month’s diary:

• The famous (or infamous, depending on how you feel about lines) Hatch Restaurant officially opens at 7 a. m. May 1. Fried bologna and onions for breakfast, anyone?

• Sometime in May, a restaurant to be called the Nosh Comfort Food Cafe will open at 7900 Transit Road in the Premier Plaza, between Sheridan and Maple in Williamsville. It will feature home cooking and will be operated by Brown’s Kosher Meat Market, formerly on Eggert Road behind the Northtown Plaza in Amherst. There will be a butcher counter on the premises.
