Work of Artie

Artie Lange never threatens to be uninteresting. The comedian’s raunchy road act continues to be a red-hot draw, no doubt helped along by his prominent place on Sirius Satellite Radio’s “Howard Stern Show.” Lange even landed a book, 2008’s “Too Fat to Fish,” on the New York Times best-seller list.
But as Stern devotees know, Lange’s career highs have been matched by lows in his personal life. His struggles with obesity and drug abuse are a frequent topic of conversation on the Stern show. Though it’s always good for a chuckle when Lange falls asleep in studio or runs through his high-calorie menu on any given morning, his antics can’t help but remind fans of great comedians whose lifestyles caught up with them.
Still, on Stern’s show, Lange comes across as a guy you’d love to hang out with. His material is typically several clicks north of PG-13, but his colorful language seems genuine— not gratuitous. Plus, he’s funny. That always helps.
So though Lange may at times lack self-control, he doesn’t lack a following. His 8 p. m. Saturday show in the Seneca Niagara Events Center is sold out.
