SHORT ORDERS

Story tools:

Mano a mano

Big competition at the New York State Restaurant Association’s Fifth Annual ProStart Taste of Education Fundraiser, to be held from 6 to 9 p. m. Feb. 5 in Salvatore’s Italian Gardens: Two of the area’s top chefs will face off in an “Iron Chef” contest.

Scott Leggett, corporate chef for the Monarch Food Group, and Scott Donhauser will face off in an hour cook-off. (We think Scott will be the winner.)

The event will also feature food stations, live music, raffles and “Food Jeopardy” cooking demonstrations; proceeds benefit culinary and hospitality students. Tickets are $20 and are available by calling Kerri Riedel at 432-2300.

Field and fork

More February doings: A farmer-chef conference called Field and Fork is scheduled for Feb. 23 at the Byrncliff Resort and Conference Center, Varysburg. The daylong conference will offer Western New York’s chefs and other food-industry professionals the opportunity to network with food producers.

A lunch featuring local products will typify the bounty that local agriculture has to offer — yes, even in midwinter. Download the appropriate registration forms by visiting www.fieldandforknetwork.com.

Cuvee weekend

February may be short, but it sure is busy. This year’s Cuvee Weekend is going to take place in Niagara Falls, Ont., from Feb. 27 through March 1. The Cuvee Gala is the opening event, with guests sampling more than 190 wines from Niagara Region wineries.

Food stations from outstanding restaurants in the area will be open, too, and touring and tasting throughout the Niagara Wine Route will be available all weekend.

Weekend tickets are priced at $200 per person and are available to the public at www.cuvee.ca or by calling (905) 684-8688.
