A Lira Christmas
Come Christmastime, the same series of age-old and potentially mind-numbing holiday songs and carols tends to issue forth from mall loudspeakers and car radios in a homogenous stream. Mixing things up a bit is highly recommended. To that end, the Chicago-based Polish song and dance troupe Lira Ensemble, North America’s prime distributor of Polish music, dance and culture, brings its “Polish Christmas” concert to the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts at 2:30 p. m. Sunday. The group will perform all manner of Polish Christmas carols and other music by the likes of Frederic Chopin and the lesser-known talents of Stanislaw Moniuszko, Henryk Wieniawski and Witold Lutoslawski. Lira’s singing ensemble is backed by a 50-piece orchestra, and the entire evening will be narrated in English by Lira’s director, Lucyna Migala. Tickets are $25 to $50 and half-off for children under 16. For more information, call 645-ARTS or visit www.ubcfa.org . — Colin Dabkowski
