Car wash cuisine. Gas station gastronomy. Vehicle victuals.

Call it what you want, but as we discovered, Delta Sonic’s Brick Oven puts forth some pretty tasty, inexpensive “fast food.”

An odd combination for sure. Car wash, gas, convenience store and brick oven pizza palace? Somehow, it works.

A visit with the niece and nephew brought forth “We’re eating here?,” followed by “We love this place!”

Always a model of efficiency, Delta Sonic’s food-ordering process is just as slick as its car washing. Oh, the fast tween fingers couldn’t wait to punch the order into the touchscreen. But wait, slow down! We missed a darn good $5 special – a 12-inch cheese and pepperoni pizza with drink. Drat!

So it was 8-inch brick oven pizzas instead – an Italian ($6), a cheese ($3) with green olives ($1), and a vegetarian ($6).

Drinks? Why, yes! How about the combo with a cookie for a measly $1.89?

Order placed, we headed to the fabulous Sonic Sipper drink station.

Excitement No. 2: a bevy of beverages. Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew and the ilk, plus Gatorade, an energy drink of some sort, Lipton iced teas and the best ever – Johnny Ryan grape, orange and birch, as well as Stewart’s root beer.

But where to park ourselves? We chose a comfy and stylish booth. Tables and chairs filled the rest of the eating area. Flat-screen TVs tuned to ESPN and Food Network provided visual stimulation, along with the people-watching factor.

The pizzas were better than expected. The nephew’s Italian was a beautiful thin crust topped with sauce, salami, pepperoni, thin prosciutto, mozzarella, Parmigiano Reggiano and fresh basil.

My vegetarian pie was scrumptious with roasted red peppers, red onions, mushrooms, tomato, basil pesto, mozzarella and creamy ricotta.

The niece loved her cheese/olive pie. Lovely, salty orbs like big eyeballs.

The thin crust was the pièce de résistance – perfectly bubbled and blistered (not burned) it was chewy, yet crisp.

Eight-inch pies filled us up. A Margherita or white runs $3.59. Specialty pizzas ($5-$6) include a Bianco (olive oil, Parmigiano Reggiano, shredded mozzarella, ricotta), Caprese (garlic, olive oil, fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato, caramelized onions, balsamic glaze) and Tuscan (olive oil, tomato sauce, mozzarella, salami, Kalamata olives, red onion, basil).

For hungrier folks, 12-inch pies are a buck more.

Pizza isn’t the only thing done well, as a second visit proved.

Would you eat a salmon Caesar salad ($8) in Delta Sonic? I did, and it was pretty tasty. Crisp, chopped romaine lettuce came tossed with sunflower seeds, shredded carrots and just enough dressing. Perched on the salad was a decent-sized (and moist) piece of salmon coated with a wasabi glaze. Tasting more like soy, it was still good.

My fella’s 8-inch ham sub ($4.99; a 14-inch version is $6.29 with four toppings) came with a choice of a white, wheat, Italian or a jalapeño cheddar roll (all Costanzo’s). He added American cheese, lettuce, mayo, banana peppers and tomatoes. Extra toppings (after four) range from 69 cents to $2 for premiums.

A turkey cobb wrap (with avocado, bacon, egg, crumbly bleu, tomato, romaine, ranch) and an 8-inch turkey sub – with chips and drink – were $5 specials.

Wraps ($6.59 with pickle, chips or fruit) include Buffalo, jalapeño chicken ranch or create your own. Build-your-own salads start at $4.99 and include four toppings.

The hand-carved turkey is on our radar. The menu says it’s roasted daily. A turkey meal ($6.99) includes stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce and roll. A turkey sandwich runs $5.99.

Hey, for less than $20 you can get a meal and a deluxe wash. If only they figured out a way to slide that pizza into your window once you’ve been Super Kissed.
