Mike Greco didn’t have any girls, but that’s not stopping the Town of Tonawanda pizzeria owner from pitching in to help raise money for Mount St. Mary Academy’s band.

From 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Greco’s shop, DiPaulo’s Pizzeria (571 Brighton Road, 835-6161) will be one of a dozen vying for honors at the Mountie Pizza Taste-off. The event will be held at the Catholic girls high school, 3756 Delaware Ave., Town of Tonawanda.

For $5, attendees can pitch in and help judge the pizzas from DiPaulo’s and other local pizza shops like Angels, John’s, La Hacienda Brighton, Gino’s, T.C. Junior’s and Mister Pizza. A panel of judges will rate the pies, but civilian tasters can offer their votes on best traditional and specialty pizzas.

Greco’s specialty pizza will be either white (garlic sauce, tomatoes, onions, mozzarella and Romano cheeses) or DiPaulo’s steak pizza (chopped ribeye steak, A-1 Steak Sauce, green peppers, onions and mozzarella).

Greco started working at DiPaulo’s in 1972, “just after my junior year in high school,” he said. He lived down the street, and worked his way up to manager. He bought the place in 1983.

“I’ve known a few MSM students, and had a few work for us, too,” Greco said. “It’s a community event, to help raise money for the band. Any sort of community service you can do, it’s good for them and it’s good for us.”
