What’s that sparkle in the air? It can mean only one thing: Doc Severinsen, former bandleader of “The Tonight Show” and former principal pops conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, is in town. Severinsen is going to be appearing twice with the orchestra in a concert called “Solid Gold Doc.”

He is also bringing his big band, a new experience for Buffalo. Every review of their recent tour gives the impression that they are raising the roof. At 86, Doc Severinsen has as much energy as ever. And at least as much fight. Last week, he spoke out vehemently against the controversial book on Johnny Carson written by attorney Henry Bushkin. Even on stage, when Severinsen is all charm, he pulls no punches.

Besides his band, Severinsen is bringing two singers, Vanessa Thomas and Steve Lippia (who has charmed audiences at the BPO before with a Frank Sinatra tribute). The concert takes place at 10:30 a.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday in Kleinhans Music Hall. Tickets are $32-$79. Call 885-5000.
