Since 2006, Dweezil Zappa has been celebrating the music of his late father, the esteemed composer, bandleader, guitarist, social critic and record maker Frank Zappa. Fronting Zappa Plays Zappa, Dweezil has been acting as missionary for Frank’s music, playing some 500 concerts around the world, winning a Grammy, and hopefully, introducing new generations of fans to this wonderful, imaginative, often incredibly sophisticated, and just as often hilarious music. Zappa Plays Zappa is not a tribute band, be assured, but rather a repertory ensemble that performs and celebrates the music of Dweezil’s dad in the same manner that, say, the BPO celebrates the music of Mahler or Beethoven.
When Zappa Plays Zappa arrives for its performance at 8 tonight in Kleinhans Music Hall, Zappa fans and newbies alike will be in for a treat – the ensemble is touring in honor of the 40th anniversary of the seminal Frank Zappa album “Roxy & Elsewhere,” and will be performing that album in full.
At 3 p.m. in Kleinhans, Dweezil will preside over a master class for guitarists. Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert are $45-$55; the afternoon master class is $75. (box office, www.kleinhansbuffalo.org, or call 885-5000).
