The members of War on Drugs – leader and songwriter Adam Granduciel, bassist David Hartley, keyboardist/guitarist Robbie Bennett and drummer Patrick Berkery – have an awful lot to live up to when they perform at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Town Ballroom (681 Main St.). The group’s new “Lost In A Dream” is one of the most compelling modern psychedelic folk releases in recent memory, and already, the dreaded “album of the year” commendation is being tossed around rather liberally, mostly by people like me. (And independent record store staffers, too.)
“I wasn’t sure I needed an album like ‘Lost in the Dream’ until I heard it,” read Paste magazine’s review. That brief sentence nailed the appeal of the album, for it is certainly one of those slow-burners that build in appeal with each listen, until you’re left wondering how you ever got along without it.
I can’t wait to hear how this new material sounds in the concert setting, and I know I’m not alone. Tickets are $17 to $23 (box office, Ticketfly.com). – Jeff Miers
