Pianist, singer and songwriter Anne Heaton has earned herself a considerable following – as well as abundant critical praise – by forging an unlikely alliance between several strains of music, favoring elements of pop, folk, gospel, soul and jazz.
Her background – which found her studying the inner compositional workings of Debussy and jazz vocalization in equal measure – enables Heaton to marry virtuosic piano playing to ebullient pop confections, in service of what the Washington Post has described as a sound that is simultaneously “tender, barbed and spiritual.”
Touring in support of her latest release, “Honeycomb,” Heaton and guitarist/vocalist Frank Marotta Jr. perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Ninth Ward at Babeville (343 Delaware Ave.). Tickets are $8 advance, $10 day of show (box office, Tickets.com).
