Spoken word and musical provocateur Lydia Lunch comes to Buffalo with her noise-rock outfit Retrovirus for a show at 8 p.m. June 30 in Hallwalls at Babeville. A famed pioneer of the grimy downtown Manhattan No Wave scene, Lunch hit clubs and adhoc venues in the late 1970s with her band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks.
Backing the DIY performer are guitarist Weasel Walter, drummer Bob Bert and bassist Tim Dahl. The music of Retrovirus is provocative, smart and danceable.
Hallwalls last featured Lunch in 1985 when she performed some of her music and spoken word pieces: she was a Hallwalls regular in their early years, back in the ‘70s. She’s been touring with Retrovirus since last year, and a few months ago read some of her writing at a tribute to writer William S. Burroughs who would have been 100 this year.
The subterranean Ninth Ward will be a perfect setting for this night of thrashing riffs and in-your-face lyrics. Earplugs may be recommended.
Tickets are $20 general admission, $18 students/seniors and $15 Hallwalls members. Visit www.hallwalls.org
