Hard to believe, but true – we’ve made it nearly to the end of the summer concert season. Tonight finds Thursday at Canalside signing off until next year, but man, what a way to go out – with a double bill featuring one of the progenitors of jam-tronica, Philadelphia’s Lotus, and perhaps Buffalo’s finest progressive music ensemble, the rapidly on-the-rise Aqueous.
Lotus is touring ostensibly in support of the recently released “Build” album, though the band is on the road the better part of every year whether it has a new album to support or not. Aqueous released its epic “Willy is 40” disc late last year, has spent the summer touring and working new material into its ever-changing setlist, and is poised to kick off its fall tour.
Both bands favor a bold cross-pollination of styles. Lotus incorporates elements of electronica, ambient music, hip-hop and funk into an all-instrumental pastiche; Aqueous brings prog-rock chops to bear on jam-inflected tunes with thrillingly complex structures. Both bands are also known for the raw power and considerable dynamics of their live shows. Which means the final Thursday at Canalside show of the season is poised to be one of the best.
Showtime is 5 p.m. and admission is free.
