You’d be excused for thinking that Kansas City is the last place that might be a hotbed of hip-hop. But you’d also be wrong. It’s right there in the middle of the Midwest, in fact, that hyper-virtuosic rapper Tech N9ne oversees his empire, Strange Music. Though he is far from a household name, Tech N9ne has turned Strange Music into a multimillion dollar operation that includes a team of rappers, a merchandising business, and of course, the man’s music.
Not bad for a poor kid from Kansas. In fact, Forbes magazine recently ran a profile on Tech N9ne’s doings, citing him as one of the most financially successful modern hip-hop artists, and rather surprisingly, nailing the essence of his jaw-dropping microphone technique by saying he “marries the verbal dexterity of hip-hop’s Golden Age with the tenacity of thrash metal.” That’s nicely put.
At the core of Tech’s success as a hip-hop mogul lies the fact that he is one of the form’s bravest, most radical artists. Hear and see for yourself at 8 p.m. Saturday, when Tech N9ne brings his “Something Else Tour 2013” to the Town Ballroom (681 Main St.). Tickets are $30 advance, $35 day of show (box office, Tickets.com).
