The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra likes to give us big band salutes right about this time of year – a fine tradition, because sometimes our spring needs a little bit of a boost. On Saturday, conductor Matt Catingub is flying in to preside over a pops concert including numbers associated with Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney and other legends.
Catingub, conductor of California’s new Glendale Pops Orchestra, has a flair for the retro. One jazz disc a few years ago by the Honolulu Symphony (Catingub is of Polynesian descent) featured arrangements of his featuring florid strings that could take you back to the 1940s and ’50s. Practically a one-man band, he not only is a conductor and arranger but a saxophonist, woodwind artist, pianist and vocalist. And he is sure to find kindred spirits in the ranks of the BPO.
Catch Catingub with the BPO at 8 p.m. Saturday in Kleinhans Music Hall. Tickets are $28-$76. For info on BPO events, call 885-5000.
